Hub dyno tests include injector deposit accumulation, fuel economy, fuel comparisons, DPF soot loading accumulation and vehicle tuning. An extensive range of data acquisition possibilities includes advanced OBD parameters beyond the standard OBDII channels.

A manufacturer of high performance vehicles needed quickly to accumulate mileage on a highly confidential prototype. The vehicle was tested in Millbrook’s secure hub dynamometer test facility, meaning it was not visible to any other proving ground users.

Testing the vehicle on a hub dynamometer allowed it to be run at high loads for much longer durations than would be possible on a test track. The high performance nature of the vehicle meant reaching equivalent road speeds of ~200mph. Running the test on Millbrook’s hub dynamometer avoided the risks usually associated with such high speed testing, as well as saving wear on expensive tires.

High Performance Vehicle Mileage Accumulation

Several load control modes were used including constant power/torque, sweeps, and road resistance simulation. The control of the vehicle’s engine speed and torque ensured absolute repeatability of drive cycles, allowing direct comparisons between variables such as fuels, vehicles and engine maps.

The hub dynamometer provided more accurate data than that of a traditional rolling road due to the direct interaction between the dynamometer and vehicle hubs, negating any power loss through tire slippage. System inertia was also negligible due to the independent absorption system.

Dynamometer data was synchronized with CAN Calibration Protocol (CCP) data from the manufacturer’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) into one file. This allowed simple and efficient interrogation of the data by the development engineers.

The customer also had the option to output real time data via CANBUS to allow integration with other systems. This could have included logging hundreds of non-standard diagnostic channels from vehicle OBD systems, or combining data with high speed analogue sensor measurements.

Millbrook’s hub dynamometers offer highly accurate and adaptable drive cycles to test vehicle performance and fuel economy. Its hub dynamometers can test up to 1,120kW/4,800Nm in 2WD configuration and 818kW/3600Nm in 4WD configuration.

Millbrook’s highly experienced team can calculate the maximum power and torque output of a vehicle in each gear using traditional power curves. Powertrain performance graphs, or torque curves, can be produced directly from the Rototest software as part of the hub dynamometer test, allowing quick and easy power comparison.
