Hub Dyno Fuel Additive Performance Testing

Hub dynos provide Millbrook’s customers with accurate, adaptable and repeatable drive cycles, ideal for examining the performance of fuels, lubricants and performance additives and their dirty or clean up potential.

Millbrook can conduct the DISI test on a complete vehicle using a hub dyno or similar tests on a motorcycle dyno.

Running the test on a complete vehicle allows Millbrook to perform initial test development before test engines are available, and allows the test to be conducted on other vehicles, if required, to evaluate the effect of different engine technologies. A vehicle fitted with the CEC test method engine can also be made available for testing upon request.

Example Hub Dyno Test

The vehicle is instrumented so that all key performance parameters, including engine speed, engine load, injection timing and injector pulse duration are measured.

Injectors are cleaned for 6 hours in an ultrasonic bath.

External fuel rig is set up for the vehicle to allow uninterrupted switching of the test fuels.

Dirty up cycle is run for 48 hours at 56Nm (measured wheel torque divided by overall gear ration) at 2,000rpm set point.

The clean-up cycle is run on the additized fuel for a duration of 24 hours at the same set point.

Hub dyno tests are run on complete vehicles, so can be used to evaluate different engine technologies and carry out initial vehicle screening programs. In addition, for testing on motorcycles at speeds of up to 200mph, Millbrook has a rolling road motorcycle dynamometer.

Dirty fuel (un-additized) can cause injector fouling which can affect injected fuel delivery and therefore the performance, driveability and emissions of the vehicle. Additized fuel can reduce injector fouling, or recover performance of fouled injectors. The whole-vehicle DISI Injector deposit test (based on CEC TDG-F-113) can discriminate between fuels of differing performances, measured primarily by looking at duration of fuel injection, with options to look at wider effects on emissions and performance.
