Bringing EV Testing to the West Coast with New California Facility
  • New facility in California offers e-machine testing at speeds of 20,000rpm, inverter testing, Vehicle-in-the-Loop (VIL) test capabilities and battery simulation
  • Established in San Francisco Bay area to serve growing number of EV developers

Millbrook Revolutionary Engineering (Millbrook RE) has officially opened its new electric vehicle (EV) driveline test facility in the San Francisco Bay area. The company brings the expertise of its three other driveline test facilities to California, alongside the cutting-edge dynamometer test systems it has designed and installed.

The new 25,000 square foot facility features high-speed input motor testing equipment capable of speeds of up to 20,000rpm. It also offers Vehicle-in-the-Loop (VIL) test capabilities and battery simulators rated up to 1,100V, 1,200A and 320kW (continuous). The facility has been created to serve the American, Asian and European automakers that are developing the next generation of EVs on the West Coast. It will enable customers to perform complex integration testing and validation of EV powertrain components, full powertrains and complete vehicles.

Millbrook RE has initially installed four electric drive unit test stands, providing enough capacity to perform approximately 2,880 test hours per month for both EV powertrain components and complete drivelines.

Allen White, President of Millbrook Revolutionary Engineering, said: “The opening of our new facility in the San Francisco Bay area represents a step-change in the local testing and development support available to EV engineers. The new facility is truly world-class, with our high-speed input motor testing equipment offering greater capacity and capability than ever before.”

Alex Burns, President of Millbrook, said: “The automotive industry has undergone momentous change in recent years. The latest engineering challenges, such as electrification, connectivity and automation require vehicle manufacturers to innovate at a faster rate than ever before, despite budgets being put under increasing pressure. Millbrook’s expansion into a number of markets allows us to offer consistent independent test services internationally.

The opening of our Californian facility builds on Millbrook Revolutionary Engineering’s success in Michigan, and allows engineers on the West Coast to make their development cycles faster and more efficient by using a more local test facility.”

Millbrook offers a wide range of EV driveline test solutions in the USA, UK and Northern Finland. These include varied outdoor and indoor test tracks, e-motor and e-axle test cells and battery test facilities. In addition, Millbrook Revolutionary Engineering designs, builds, installs, and services dynamometer test systems across the continents, with presence in the USA, Europe and Asia.
