Lead Mechanical Engineer

Job Duties

Responsible for the mechanical design of a wide range of automotive testing products and will also provide technical support and resource leadership for the mechanical engineering department. Provide technical support on specific projects as identified by the engineering manager. Identify deficiencies within the mechanical engineering department and implement improvements and process changes to correct these deficiencies. Carry out detailed mechanical design work including 3D modelling, simulation (eg stress, strain, vibration modal analysis, and thermal) and design verification testing as required. Responsible for specification creation and compliance of designs, and preparing and presenting mechanical designs at design reviews. Assess mechanical technical risks and direct processes to mitigate such risks. Responsible for creation of 2D drawings to allow manufacture or purchase. Responsible for generation of assembly drawings and bills of materials. Works closely with operations, manufacturing and production engineers to ensure products are designed for manufacture both internally and externally. Responsible for reporting progress of mechanical engineering department tasks to the Engineering Manager and Project Management teams. Creation of technical reports and documentation. Provide technical expertise on projects and direction on technical approach. Responsible for handling mechanical engineering department work load and scheduling. Responsible for ensuring adequate mechanical engineering resources are applied to new jobs and projects. Act as a coach and mentor for new engineers on staff, Occasionally act as project coordinator on single and/or multidisciplinary projects. Responsible for checking drawing/parts libraries are up to date and correct regularly. Responsible for checking and validating mechanical engineers designs and drawings where required. Provide technical expertise and support for mechanical engineers in design techniques and the departmental processes. Identify any personal or mechanical team training needs and develop plans to address these needs. Regularly review the departmental design processes and put in place correction actions.


Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field plus 5 years experience as mechanical and/or test engineer in the automotive industry. Must have 5 years engine and powertrain system designing and testing responsibility. Specific requirements: Must have 3 years of experience with automotive component or system level testing and product validation; Must have 5 yrs prior experience with dynamometer testing; Must have 5 years advanced knowledge of automotive engine, transmission, driveline system and hybrid vehicles functionalities; Must have 5 years of hands-on experience with powertrain and electric motor testing technologies and relative testing equipment, including torque meter, pressure sensor, thermal couple and flow meter; Must have at least 5 years of experience with data acquisition using National Instrument system and LabView software; Must have 5 years of experience acting as customer contact for engineering related projects; Must have at least 5 years of experience with engine and powertrain system components design using Creo 2.0 or similar CAD (Computer Aided Design) tools, such as Catia V5 R19 or UG.
